Compass For Fools 2004/5

A work inspired from the painting of Hieronimus Bosch "The Ship of Fools"

The North: inner world, mental reflection, introspection, introversion, subconscious, and retreat.

The South: expansion, spontaneity, connection with the surrounding, communication, playfulness, and seduction.

The West: reason, work, time, efficiency, organization, individuality, and aggressiveness.

The East: dreams, rituals, religiosity, group soul, supernatural vision, faith, and spirituality.
        
    The associations of these cardinal points are inspired by the physical place of our different civilizations from an occidental point of view as well as the classification of Hippocrates with his four fundamental character traits. Some elements can also be found in the traditional cosmogony of Navajos from America and African legends about Yoruba Gods.

Our aim is to explore the meaning of the four cardinal points in a psychological and physical way. The different qualities and character traits of the four cardinal points open a vast field of exploration into human nature and its different possible interactions.

During this journey the four dancers are coming across different situations, created from the tension and interaction of those different qualities in human behaviour. Conflict, manipulation, mutual acknowledgement and symbiosis is the heart and drive of the work.

The common goal of the group is to come together and move in one direction. However, the cardinal differences between them do not always make this an easy process.
These situations and social behaviours are coming from the contact and friction between the meanings of the four cardinal points, four states of mind and is the playground and the material for this work.
           

Sensual/violent eruptive movements/secret gestures/ecstatic /tormented/savage jumping.
